Koraput: Two Excise department officials sustained critical injuries Friday night after being attacked by ganja smugglers in Odisha’s Koraput district, a source said Saturday.
According to the source, the injured officials have been identified as IIC Durbadhala Biswal and constable Meghnada Sabar. Both were being treated in the surgery ward of SLNMCH (Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital) at the time of filing this report.
Following the attack, a police team was deployed to nab the culprits. However, the assailants fled the spot taking cover of darkness and dense forest.
A manhunt is on, a police source said.
The source further informed that three teams of Jeypore-Borigumma excise range had launched a raid based on a tip-off Friday night. The teams went to a forest near under Kotpad police limits to bust illegal ganja trade.
However, the moment the five-membered team – including IIC Biswal and Constable Sabar – entered the forest, about 20 to 25 assailants attacked them with weapons. In the attack, Biswal and Sabar sustained critical injuries.
