Cuttack: Commissionerate Police arrested one person after a girl lodged an FIR alleging rape in a hotel room at Madhupatna in Cuttack, a source said.
Based on the FIR, police arrested the suspect who is an employee of the hotel.
The source informed that the victim hails from outside Odisha. Police were interrogating the accused at the time of filing this report.
It may be mentioned here that crimes against women in Odisha are on a rise, if National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data is anything to go by.
According to NCRB reports, as many as 31,352 cases of crime against women were registered in the state in 2021 under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), special and local laws. It was 25,489 in 2020 and 23,183 in 2020.
The report further suggested that Odisha figured among top five states in India in crimes against women while reporting the highest incidence of assault on women for outraging modesty in 2021.
The Crime in India Report revealed that Odisha registered highest 14,853 cases of outraging modesty while Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan followed with 10,568, 9,393 and 9,079 cases respectively.
