Jajpur: An 18-year-old girl student of Jajpur district’s Government Polytechnic was found hanging in her room in Biraja women’s hostel, a source said Tuesday.

A friend of the deceased found her hanging from a ceiling fan in her room early Tuesday, principal of Government Polytechnic Rajendra Patra said.

The deceased was identified as Rojalin Patra. She was a resident of Sendhapur village under Jenapur police limits in Jajpur district.

According to the source, Rojalin was a third-year electrical engineering student who got selected for four campus placements.

The mother of the deceased alleged that a male student texted Rojalin about the campus placements and threatened her not to appear in further campus recruitments.

Rojalin’s mother went on to allege that another student also tried to beat her up yesterday after which the victim did not want to stay on the campus anymore.

Rojalin did not disclose the names of the harassers to anyone as she was afraid of them, her mother said.

The deceased’s family members, relatives, and villagers stirred up a commotion inside the campus blaming the college administration for the girl’s death. They alleged that ragging by some college students led her to take to the extreme step.

Jajpur Police have launched a probe into this matter.
