Sambalpur: A girl went missing after she fell into the water of Burla power channel in Sambalpur district, a source said Wednesday.
The victim was identified as Nisha Jha who hails from Jharsuguda and pursued BBA at an educational institute in Rourkela.
According to the source, Nisha had gone to the Burla power channel bridge along with her male friend — a Plus-III student at Gangadhar Meher University — at around 5 pm Tuesday.
While the two were sitting under the siphon of the power channel bridge, water was suddenly discharged at a very high speed. As a result, Nisha lost her balance and was swept away by the running water. To her rescue, the male friend of the victim jumped into the river. However, his efforts went fruitless, a local source said.
Subsequently, Fire Services personnel reached the spot and conducted a search operation for the missing girl. At the time of filling this report, the girl was still untraceable. The search operation is on.
Police have detained the victim’s male friend and are questioning him about the incident.
Notably, Chinmayee Priyadarshini Sahoo — a former student of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) — had gone to the Power Channel bridge with her male friend where she allegedly jumped into the water February 28, 2023 under mysterious circumstances. Her body was fished out the very next day. An investigation in this regard is underway.
