Bhadrak: A man was allegedly killed by a pack of jackals at Kumarpur village in Basudevpur area of Bhadrak district, a source said Tuesday.

According to the source, the body of the deceased was spotted Tuesday morning while it was being dragged by the pack near a pond in the village. The villagers shooed away the gnawing jackals and informed the local police.

The deceased was identified as Sarat Sahu (44), who was a resident of Kumarpur village.

A family member of Sahu said that the victim had gone to the pond for fishing late Monday night, but did not return home.

Locals suggested that Sahu was killed by the jackals. However, the exact reason behind the death is yet to be ascertained.

Local police have launched a probe into the incident and sent the body for postmortem.

Notably, a similar incident of man-animal conflict was seen last year in Kendrapara district’s Dhanadia village where a jackal injured as many as six persons. Later, the jackal was killed by one of the villagers.
