Bhubaneswar: The Mahanadi and Brahmani river water is polluted due to the discharge of wastewater into the rivers of urban areas, Forest, Environment and Climate change Minister Pradip Kumar Amat told the Odisha Assembly Tuesday.

Replying to a question of Nityananda Gond (BJP), the Minister said a survey conducted by the State Pollution Control Board from January to December 2022 found the BOD and TC level
above the prescribed parameter in 22 places of the Mahanadi and Brahmani rivers.

Amat said the municipal authorities and the Housing and Urban Development department have directed to set up Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) for the purification of wastewater.

At present five STP in Bhubaneswar, three in Cuttack, two in Puri and one each at Talcher and Sambalpur have been set up.

In addition to it, 119 Septage Treatment Plants (SeTP) in 115 urban areas were set up out of which 110 SeTP have been made operational.

The minister said the pollution level in water would be reduced after the operation of these projects.
