Odisha: Man gets life term for killing friend

Bhubaneswar: A local court here Tuesday sentenced life imprisonment to a man after convicting him for killing his friend at Bhubaneswar railway station here April 23, 2022.

The convict was identified as Shankar Pandey from Nayapalli area of Bhubaneswar. Pandey and the deceased, Mohammad Allam, used to beg at the railway station and were drug addicts.

“At about 3:30pm April 23, 2022, informant Guduli Jena, along with her family and her uncle Allam were sitting near the old booking counter of the railway station when one Sanjay Nayak reached there and sat near them. After some time, accused Pandey also reached the spot and started assaulting Sanjay for not procuring ganja for him. When Allam interfered, Pandey got enraged and assaulted Allam with fist blows on his chest, face and head. He also kicked on his head and belly,” public prosecutor Sarad Chandra Samanta said.

Allam sustained severe injuries and lost his senses. The onlookers rushed him to Capital Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

The court, after examining the statements of eight witnesses and other documents, convicted Pandey and sentenced him to life, along with a fine of Rs 10, 000. Pandey would serve additional imprisonment of one year in case he fails to pay the amount.
