Odisha: Newly-wed woman ‘killed’ over dowry

Papadahandi/Nabarangpur: A newly married woman was allegedly killed by her inlaws over dowry at Bhimasahi village under Papadahandi police limits in Nabarangpur district, Friday afternoon.

The incident came to the fore Saturday after the deceased’s mother lodged an FIR in this connection seeking justice.

The deceased woman was identified as Gita Sethi, daughter of Ram Sethi and Sushama Sethi of Canal Colony under Sadar police limits in Malkangiri district.

According to sources, Gita was married to Sudam Sethi, a teacher by profession and a resident of Bhimasahi under Papadahandi police limits in Nabarangpur district in July 2023. However, after marriage, Gita was allegedly being tortured by her in-laws who were demanding more dowries. Gita told her parents about her ordeals and returned to her paternal home. However, her family members convinced her and again sent her back to her in-laws’ house.

Afterwards, the family members of Sudam informed Gita’s kin that she committed suicide by hanging with the help of a rope. They said, Sudam took Gita to a nearby hospital Friday afternoon around 2pm, where the doctors pronounced her dead.

Subsequently, Gita’s mother lodged a complaint alleging murder of her daughter by her in-laws over dowry at Papadahandi police station.

The in-laws of the woman are absconding and there was tension in nearby areas over the matter.

Besides, the bereaved family along with the body staged a sit-in in front of the community health centre (CHC) in Papadahandi demanding justice.

On being informed, SDPO Aditya Sen and Papadahandi PS IIC, Dipak Kumar Jena reached the spot and pacified the agitating family members by assuring them arrest of all the culprits within one week. After getting assurance the family members allowed the body to be taken for post-mortem.
