New Delhi: Members of Milita Odisha Nisha Nibaran Abhiyan (MONNA) Wednesday joined the day-long protest organised by Proutist Bloc, India and Rashtriya Sharabbandi Sanyukt Morcha at Jantar Mantar here demanding a liquor-free India.
According to the Rashtriya Sharabbandi Sanyukt Morcha, around 500 members from 11 states have participated in the protest demanding a blanket ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages in the country.
Kanhu Charan Behera, one of the 15 members of MONNA who have participated in the rally, said, “We want the country to be liquor free.”
It has been seen that when one state bans the liquor then people smuggle it from neighboring states, Behera said, adding this has been happening in Bihar, Gujarat and other states. “So, it is important that liquor is banned across the country,” he stated.
He further said that the movement has become very popular in Odisha and many women are joining it.
Behera also said that they wanted to make it a political issue for the upcoming general elections. He said, “We will support the political party which agrees on complete ban on liquor in the country.”
“We have submitted the memorandum to the President, the Prime Minister and the Home Minister in this regard and would also try to meet the Home Minister to press for our demand,” he added.
