Rayagada: Police arrested a man in Kashipur block of Odisha’s Rayagada district, on charges of marrying four women without getting a divorce from any one of them, a source said Wednesday.
The accused was identified as Gopinath Kisan — who is a junior engineer posted in Public Works Department – and is a resident of Ghumusar village in Sambalpur district.
Police Monday arrested Gopinath from his Saipriya Nagar residence on the basis of an FIR lodged by his fourth wife Sunita Kisan. She accused him of physical and mental torture for dowry. Kishan has been booked under various sections of IPC.
Sunita said that Gopinath informed her about his first wife who had passed away. However, she later came to know about his other two marriages. She further claimed that Gopinath assaulted her physically and threatened to kill her if she refused to give him more dowry.
Sunita said that she had also approached the police in the initial phase of her marriage. But, Gopinath asked for a second chance from her. However, his alleged torture continued.
After being tortured for four months after the marriage, Sunita, along with her parents approached Rayagada police station Monday and lodged an FIR against Gopinath.
Sunita, a resident of Pali village in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district, got in touch with Gopinath through a matrimonial site. As per the wishes of both of their families, they tied the knot in February 2022 at a temple in Jharsuguda.
Sunita added that he allegedly tortured and abandoned his two previous wives, who were natives of Sundargarh and Rourkela.
