Kendrapara: Odisha Police arrested the prime accused Rashmi Ranjan Roul on the charge of stabbing a fellow villager to death and critically injuring his brother-in-law due to political rivalry in Kendrapara district.
Kendrapara SP Madkar Sandeep Sampat said Roul and two of his associates fatally stabbed Amit Kumar Patra and seriously injured his brother-in-law SK Jena Friday night while they were returning home from neighbouring Dahianta village after attending a religious function.
The SP said there was political rivalry between the deceased and the accused since the last panchayat poll.
While the accused Roul, a resident of Sahara village, was supporting the sitting sarpanch, the deceased had been backing the rival candidate.
According to a police source, Patra, along with his brother-in-law Sanjay Kumar Jena, had gone to Dahianta village April 14 night to take Prasad organised at a religious function.
There an altercation took place between the two.
While Patra and his brother-in-law, were returning after taking Prasad, Roul and his two associates attacked them near Sahira Chowk. Roul allegedly stabbed Patra, to death. His brother-in-law Sanjay Kumar Jena sustained critical injuries while trying to save him.
Jena was first rushed to Aul CHC and later shifted to District Head Quarter hospital and later to SCB medical college and hospital, Cuttack.
Police registered a case and arrested Roul after Manoranjan Patra, the deceased’s uncle, lodged an FIR at Aul police station.
