Khurda beats Ganjam in COVID caseload

Bhubaneswar:  Khurda district has surpassed Ganjam district in reporting the highest number of COVID-19 cases. While the infections are rising alarmingly in the state capital, Ganjam is currently seeing a decline in the number of cases.

Latest data released by the state Health department showed that with the addition of 722 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, Khurda is now the hotbed of the disease in the state. As of date, the district has reported 18,881 COVID-19 cases. On the other hand, Ganjam reported 18,345 cases till Thursday.

However, in terms of fatalities owing to the infection, Ganjam is still at the top of the chart. A total of 197 patients died in Ganjam so far against 70 deaths in Khurda district.

As far as recoveries are concerned, Ganjam has seen 17,162 recoveries, while 12,445 patients recovered from the disease in Khurda in the last one month.

In August, there has been a paradigm shift in terms of districts reporting highest cases. Ganjam, which was the worst-hit district till recently, moved towards stabilisation in August.

At the same time, Mayurbhanj and Rayagada districts too have started seeing a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 tally in the state rose to 1,13,411 on Thursday as 3,631 more people tested positive for the disease, while eight fresh fatalities pushed the state’s coronavirus death toll to 522, a health department official said.

Of the fresh cases, 2,214 were detected in quarantine centres, while 1,417 tested positive for COVID-19 during contact tracing.
