Rourkela: A student died Sunday night due to severe burn injuries as a result of hot dal spilling over him at Dengula High School under Koida block in Odisha’s Sundargarh district, Headmistress of the school Carmel Bilung said Monday.

The deceased is identified to be Gelet Hanga, who was a Class-VIII student in high school.

According to Bilung, hot dal spilled over Gelet while he was helping the hostel’s cook shift the container from the gas stove March 6.

Subsequently, Gelet was taken to Koida Community Health Centre (CHC) and later shifted to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) in Rourkela as his health condition worsened, Bilung added.

However, the deceased’s family members accuse the school authorities of Gelet’s death.

Some of the locals alleged that the school staff often used to involve students in cooking work.

A local source said that however, the mishap occurred March 6 but it came to light only after Gelet’s death.

Locals demanded a thorough probe in this regard.
