Phulbani: A court in Odisha’s Kandhamal district has sentenced a tribal man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping a 17-year-old girl and repeatedly raping her three years ago.

Fast Track Court Judge-cum-Additional District Judge Bhaskar Chandra Sahu Wednesday also slapped a fine of Rs 2 lakh on the man. He has to serve an additional two years in prison if he fails to pay the amount.

He was convicted under sections of the Indian Penal Code and POCSO Act, Special Public Prosecutor Banamali Behera said.

The convict had kidnapped the girl from her village January 5, 2019 and taken her to Kerala, where he repeatedly raped her for a couple of days. He worked in a plywood factory in the southern state.

Based on an FIR lodged by the girl’s father with Tikabali Police Station, law enforcers had detained the parents of the convict, forcing him to bring the girl to the police and surrender himself.
