Bhubaneswar: Two people died and more than four lakh people, spread over 21 districts, were affected by heavy rain and floods in Odisha, Special Relief Commissioner’s Office source here said.
The source added that while one died due to a wall collapse in Keonjhar district, another lost his life in Jajpur due to drowning.
It said 4,11,338 people in 667 Gram Panchayats spread over 136 blocks and 101 wards in 26 ULBs (Urban Local Bodies) were affected while 51,678 people were evacuated from low-lying areas to safer places.
As many as 442 food distribution centres were opened to provide food to the affected people. At least 2,320 houses were damaged in heavy rain and floods and five breaches were reported in river embankments due to the flood – three of them in Jajpur district and one each in Boudh and Jagatsinghpur district, informed the source.

While two breaches each were reported in Mahanadi and Kani rivers and one in Brahmani river. The authorities have deployed 106 Response teams including 13 ODRAF, eight NDRF, 85 Fire Services teams to help the district administration in rescue and relief operations, added the source.
Official source said the water level in all the major rivers including Mahanadi, Devi, Brahmani, Baitarani, Budhabalanga, Subarnarekha, Vamsadhara, Rushikulya and Jalaka started decreasing.
In Hirakud reservoir, only seven gates were opened as the inflow to the reservoir was 4,92,911 cusecs while the outflow was 1,56,676 cusecs at 15:00 hours.
