Jagatsinghpur: A woman and her minor daughter were killed in a road accident at Chasapada square under Balikuda police limits in Jagatsinghpur district Tuesday, a source said.

The deceased woman was identified as Kalima Bibi and her six-year-old daughter as Alia Khatun.

According to the source, while Mukhtar Khan from Mulisingh village under Tirtol police limits was riding a two-wheeler to a nearby hospital with his daughter-in-law and two grandchildren, a sand-laden truck collided with them as they approached Chasapada square.

Consequently, Kalima and Alia were thrown off the two-wheeler and died on the spot. Meanwhile, Mukhtar and his second granddaughter sustained injuries, the source added.

On being informed, police recovered the bodies and sent them to Jagatsinghpur District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for postmortem. The truck was seized and taken to Tirtol Police Station.

Following the incident, locals set up a blockade at the spot by burning tyres. They demanded measures be taken to prevent accidents on the narrow stretch of the road. Vehicular communication on the route was temporarily hindered as a result of the agitation.

Inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Balikuda Police Station Salil Pradhan and his team reached the spot after receiving information about the blockade. He pacified the locals by assuring them to take appropriate action in this regard.
