Berhampur: A youth bludgeoned his younger brother to death with a dumbbell over a property dispute behind Gosaninuagaon police station in Silk City, Wednesday.

The victim was identified as Surendra Behera, 31, alias Budu, son of Seema Behera of 10th lane, Nehru Nagar here. The accused Purna Behera, 35, surrendered at the police station after the murder.

Police sent the body for post-mortem and launched an investigation. A scientific team was also pressed into service and the blood-stained dumbbells were also seized from the spot.

Police arrested the accused after registering a case over a complaint filed by the mother of the deceased and the accused. Preliminary inquiry by police suggested the woman Seema Behera had received a house-106, Block-B at 10th lane in Nehru Nagar under the Centre-sponsored Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY).

The woman was staying in the house with her three sons. The eldest son was disabled. The house was the bone of contention between the two other siblings as the deceased was the nominee of the house owned in the name of their mother.

This enraged Purna as he decided to eliminate Surendra. The incident occurred when their mother left the house to go to work Thursday morning. The eldest son had also gone out on some work.

The matter came to the fore when Seema returned home at 9am and found her younger son lying dead in a pool of blood. She rushed to the police station and informed the police. There she found her middle son who had surrendered at the police station and admitted to his crime.
