Bhubaneswar: Rights activist Biswapriya Kanungo has filed a petition with the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) seeking investigation into the encounter in which an aide of gangster Tito and dreaded criminal Balaram Mallick alias Chagala died and `50 lakh as compensation for the bereaved family.
Following the petition, the OHRC asked the Additional director general of police and the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (southern range) to probe into the encounter and submit a report within six months. The Commission directed the authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances that led to the death of Chagala.
Chagala was a resident of Ranailo village under Niali police station limits of Cuttack district.
Earlier, the family members of Chagala had alleged that contrary to the claims by the police, Chagala had been detained by the police for two days before the encounter. They alleged that police have killed him unlawfully.
Notably, a police team carried out a raid at Nabaghanapur village in Nayagarh district where Chagala along with his aides were allegedly planning a crime.
Upon getting wind of the police approaching, sources said, the criminals opened fire at the team. During the exchange of fire, Chagala sustained severe bullet injuries in both his legs. However, his two accomplices managed to flee.
