Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has severely reprimanded Mayurbhanj Police for its lackadaisical attitude towards filing a case on allegations of gang-rape of three women. The complainant alleged that his own sister, along with two women relatives, were gang-raped by villagers who also allegedly killed two of them.
The complainant also alleged that police personnel from the local police station sexually abused the trio. The commission gave the directions while hearing a plaint lodged by advocate Nishikant Mishra on behalf of the complainant.
The commission asked the SP of Mayurbhanj to initiate probe into the incident immediately after registering a case based on the complaint lodged by the victim May 3, 2017.
It directed the SP to entrust a senior-level officer to head the probe in the matter. The commission also rejected the report of the SP submitted March 15 terming it a as a repetition of the views held by the officers. The SP has been instructed to submit the ‘action taken’ report within six weeks.
Notably, three women of a family which was ostracized by the village, went to police station in order to lodge a complaint against the injustice meted out to them by the villagers. However, they were allegedly gang-raped by some police officers who later handed over the trio to the villagers. The villagers, by keeping them locked in a secluded place in the jungle, raped them repeatedly there. However, one of them managed to escape from the spot later revealed the matter to the complainant.
However, the complainant alleged that due to the alleged involvement of some officials, police did not take up the case.
