Cuttack, June 2: The Orissa Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Saturday directed the Commissioner of Police and chief engineer of Works department to take appropriate fire safety measures in all police establishments.
Earlier, rights activist Akhand had filed a petition with the OHRC seeking its intervention to direct police to clarify whether the police stations are equipped with fire safety measures.
Expressing concern over the issue, the Commission directed the concerned authorities to ensure installation of fire safety measures at all police stations in the twin city.
Citing that one police personnel had sustained serious burn injuries in a major fire mishap that broke out at the barrack inside Capital Police Station here May 6, the petitioner alleged despite the incident, no probe was initiated to investigate the cause of fire.
The petition also cited that the police stations under the Commissionerate Police (CP) lack adequate fire safety measures. As many important documents are stored in the police stations, fire safety measures should be installed to avert any untoward incident.
