Oil leakage to Kaudia River, illegal nexus brewing?

Paradip: Oil spilled into Kaudia River following leakage in the four-layered pipeline from Paradip port to Indian Oil terminal Sunday.

Regional Officer of Odisha State Pollution Control Board Ramesh Ekka said the oil was scheduled to be emptied from a ship Monday.

Some miscreants who came to know about this activity, allegedly made holes in pipes and attached motors; however, they were stopped and their activity was stopped, Ekka said.

This is the 12th incident of oil pipeline leakage since June 6, 2015. The Indian Oil Corporation authorities have been questioned in this regard and are yet to comment on the issue.

“The role of some insiders cannot be ruled out. Without insider involvement, it will be impossible for the illegal oil traders to know when the oil is to be emptied,” Ekka said adding that the police have been intimated about this illegal nexus.

Notably, oil pilferage is going on despite various security arrangements, including deployment of private security and installation of CCTV cameras, at the Kaudia river pipeline.
