Phiringia: She was a good teacher and her friendly behavior was her forte. Definitely having had plans of sticking to the career she would make it big, one day. Fate however had something adverse in store. She had to part with her job without committing any sin knowingly or unknowingly.
Now she is earning her livelihood by working as a daily wage labourer.
Meet Nirupama Kanhar, former teacher at Luisingh Upper Primary School under Phiringia block in Kandhamal district.
Whenever she is asked the critical question as to why she was dismissed, she always narrates the only incident that occurred in the school. “The day was June 28, 2017. Archhita Sahoo, a Class I student suddenly fell ill. She was immediately rushed to a nearby government hospital where she breathed her last. This incident was squarely blamed on me,” narrates Nirupama.
Deceased’s father gave an acknowledgement in written stating that no one is responsible for his daughter’s death, as she was a sickle cell patient and she died while under treatment. Despite this, I was held responsible and dismissed from my job,” says Nirupama in a chocked voice.
Along with Nirupama, the headmaster was also suspended. However, the headmaster was reinstated after few months by the administration but it remained compassionless towards Nirupama.
Nirupama, who is working as a daily labourer to feed her family and three children, still loves teaching. Whenever she gets leisure time from her daily waging and household chores, she gathers the children of her area and fulfils her passion. “I have faith, God cannot be ruthless. He definitely has a plan. The administration will reconsider her case and reinstate her one day, Nirupama says with eyes welling up in tears.
Her family members have also pinned hope on the administration and are waiting for her reinstating.
When contacted, Phiringia block extension officer Rabindranath Behera talked about the reinstatement of the headmaster but avoided Nirupama’s case saying it was a complicated case.
