Once disowned twice driven out, women struggles to keep new-born girl alive sans shelter

Khurda: A woman has been thrown out of her house for giving birth to a girl. This incident is reported from Banapur area in Khurda district.

For her love marriage into another religion, the woman has previously been disowned by her family members. Now, after delivering a girl child she is thrown out of her in-laws’ house. She is having a very difficult time finding a shelter to keep her newborn girl alive also as winter is reaching the peak.

Sources said some families belonging to a minor community of Kodala area in Ganjam district are living at the foot hill between Narendrapur and Kolathadiha villages under Banapur police limits in Khurda district. Sheikh Babul of this area developed a love affair with Sumitra Behera of Sanasureipur under Bheteswar panchayat few months ago. The love affair resulted in an out of religion marriage and Sumitra’s family members thus disowned and her.

Some days after marriage, Babul brought her to his house. For some days everything was normal, few days hence, her husband’s family started torturing her mentally and physically without any fault, and more so, after she delivered a baby girl in September things got out of hand.

For her love marriage and snapped relationship with her parents, she had no other option but to accept all difficulties lying down.

She was asked to leave the house and be on her own. Despite several threats when she did not go out of the house, her husband, her brother-in-law, father-in-law and mother-in-law threw her and her newborn girl out of their house November 29.

Acting on her complaint, the police registered a case and investigation is on, sources said.

As of now, Sumitra is seen taking shelter on some shop verandah in Banapur area. Where they will stay, what they will eat and how she will bring up her daughter is the haunting question.

Locals urged immediate justice to Sumitra and her girl.

In a similar incident, a woman ousted by her in-laws for bearing a girl, handed over her five-day old daughter to the district administration for her up-bringing.

According to a report, Dhaneswar Dalei of Panchugaon of Bhagabatpur panchayat under Banapur police limits drove her wife Sonia out of his house. Her fault was she gave birth to a girl. Dhaneswar has a son and two daughters from his first wife. After the death of his first wife and subsequently second wife, he married Sonia. Earlier a girl from Sonia had died.  For the sake of her daughter’s future Sonia took this decision to hand over her daughter to the district administration as Sonia has none in his family except his poor father who himself depends on others to get his stomach filled.

Now Sonia’s 12-day old daughter is at a shelter home in Janla in Khurda district.
