R. Udayagiri: One and a half months after an old man was murdered over suspicion of sorcery, his body was exhumed Sunday at Gundulu village of Abarsingh panchayat under R. Udayagiri police limits in Gajapati district.
Police’s preliminary investigation revealed that the old man was shot dead August 9 on suspicion of being a black magic practitioner. The miscreants then buried the body with a view to destroying proofs.
Police have detained six persons and are interrogating them in this regard.
According to a source, the miscreants had been suspecting the old man of killing people through black magic. It was August 9 when they came together and took him forcibly to a nearby jungle where they shot him.
The deceased’s nephew and another person bore witness to the crime but did not tell anyone about the incident as the miscreants had threatened to kill them if they revealed it to anyone.
However, the nephew lodged a report in this regard at R. Udayagiri police station Saturday.
On the basis of the complaint, the police rounded up one of the accused and during interrogation he not only admitted to the crime but also led the police to the spot where the body was buried. Later, the police exhumed the body and seized the firearm used in the crime.
The police took the other five persons involved in the crime to the police station and are interrogating them.
