One killed, 2 critical after compressor blast

Khandapara: A young labourer was killed, while two others sustained grievous injuries following a refrigerator compressor blast at a scrap wholesale shop here in Nayagarh district.

The deceased was identified as Anil Sahu (28), son of Abhimanyu Sahu, the scrap shop owner. The injured labourers were Binod Nayak (70) and Raghu Nayak (40).

According to sources, Abhimanyu owns a scrap shop in the locality. Early Monday morning, Anil found an old fridge and tried to remove its compressor to fit it in another fridge. However, the compressor exploded while Anil was cutting removing it from the refrigerator, critically injuring his chest, face and limbs.

Meanwhile, Binod and Raghu who were helping him also sustained injuries following the blast. Co-workers rescued the three of them and rushed them to Kantilo government hospital.

After preliminary treatment, Anil was referred to Nayagarh district headquarters hospital (DHH) for further treatment. However, doctors in the DHH declared him brought dead upon arrival. The body was seized and sent for autopsy.

The condition of the two other labourers was normal after treatment. On being informed, Khandapara IIC Anil Kumar Mallick reached the scraps shop and launched a probe. A case of unnatural death was registered and the body was handed over to family members after post-mortem.
