Bhubaneswar: The speaker was compelled to adjourn the House until 4:00 p.m. Thursday after the opposition BJP and Congress created a commotion in the Odisha Assembly after the death of Dusmanta Das.
Dusmanta Das (30) had attempted suicide outside the Assembly and he succumbed while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack yesterday.
The House assembled for the day at 10:30 am. But soon it witnessed an uproarious scene as BJP and Congress MLAs started demanding a clarification from the government over the death of the youth due to alleged medical negligence and denial of Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY).
As they continued creating ruckus, Speaker Surya Narayan Patro had to adjourn the House till 11:30 am.
As the House reassembled at 11:30 am, the same pandemonium returned with the members of opposition parties shouting slogans. This led to the Speaker adjourning the house till 4:00 pm.
Notably, Dusmanta, a resident of Kujang area in Jagatsinghpur district, had met with the accident March 22, 2020 while returning home on his two-wheeler. He collided with a pick-up van. He was initially admitted at the Jagatsinghpur DHH. But later, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack. He underwent a plastic surgery on his left leg March 23. But it was not successful. The second plastic surgery June 20 also proved futile. He then tried to get any benefits under Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY) but failed. His letter to the CM for assistance and staging dharana too yielded him no results.
Alleging medical negligence and denial of treatment, Dusmanta, eventually attempted suicide Wednesday in front the Odisha Assembly and died in the evening while undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMH), Cuttack.
