Only 2.2L in Orissa pay income-tax

Bhubaneswar, July 3: Only 2.2 lakh households in Orissa are paying their income taxes, says the Socio-Economic and Caste Census.
The report said around 88.88 per cent rural households in the state are earning below `5,000. The number of these households stands at 75,78,136. Likewise, 6,31,729 rural families in the state earn between `5,000 and `10,000. Their percentage stands at 7.33, while 4,10,930 households in the state earn `10,000 or more, it said.
Of the total 98,85,118 households, 12,62,291 families live in urban areas with an average household size of 4.21.
While 87.67 per cent families in the state are headed by men, 12.31 families are headed by women.
Around 39.49 per cent households are deriving a major part of income from manual labour.
The number of rural households with salaried jobs, the report says, is 5,86,475 which constitutes a mere 6.8 per cent.
