Odisha High Court directs Nayagarh SP to provide security to Pari’s family

Cuttack: The Orissa High Court directed Thursday the Superintendent of Police (SP), Nayagarh district to provide security to family members of ‘Pari’. The five-year-old was allegedly abducted and murdered in June this year.

The High Court’s observation came while hearing a PIL filed by the Bharatiya Bikash Parishad.

The Odisha government has also been directed to submit the updated status report of the investigation into the case.

In its PIL, the Bharatiya Bikash Parishad sought protection for Pari’s family as some politicians and influential local persons are allegedly involved in the case. In their plea to the High Court they have asked for the order of a CBI probe into the case and Rs 25 lakh compensation to the family.

The Odisha government and the Nayagarh district administration have been made parties in the petition. The next hearing on the petition has been scheduled for December 16.

Pari was allegedly abducted when she was playing outside her residence at Jadupur village in Nayagarh June 14. Her body was recovered 50 metres away from the place where she went missing June 23. Registering a case, the police launched an investigation.

The case came to the fore November 24 when the distressed parents attempted self-immolation in front of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. This sparked massive public outrage across the state. The opposition parties created a ruckus at House, accusing Minister Arun sahoo of shielding the accused and demanding his expulsion from the BJD party.
