Orissa rowers bag three medals

Cuttack, Sept 3: Orissa rowers representing East Zone SAI Centre bagged three medals including two silver and a bronze on the first day of the Inter-Zone Kayaking and Canoeing Championship at the Jagatpur Rowing Complex here Thursday.

In the 1000 metres Women’s Kayaking Singles Skull event, Sarojini Toppo bagged a silver medal. In the men’s category, Jajit Kujjur secured the silver medal as well.

In the C-2 Canoeing Men’s 1000 metres Doubles Skull event, Rajendra Nayak finished third to be satisfied with a bronze medal. Altogether 80 participants from 15 SAI centres across the country are participating in the tournament.

Manjit selected

Manjit Singh of Barbil has been selected Thursday to represent India in the WAKO World Kickboxing Championship in Russia, November 21-29. He was selected for the mega event after winning a silver medal in the Asian WAKO Kickboxing Championship at Boxing Hall, Balewadi. “I aim to do well in the prestigious event and bring laurels for my country,” an elated Manjit stated.

 Chess tourney

Khurda District Association under the aegis of All Orissa Chess Association will jointly organise the IVth Keshabananda Das Memorial All India FIDE Rating Chess Championship here September 11-17. More than 100 participants are expected to take part in the tournament in which GM Neelotpal Das of PSPB has been given the top billing. The tournament carries a cash prize of Rs 5.25 lakh.

Asima to join camp

Hockey Gangpur goal keeper Asima Minz has been selected  to join the national coaching camp for goalkeepers at MDCNS in New Delhi, September 5- 28.  Hockey India high performance director Roelant Oltmans will coordinate the camp.

Team to leave

Orissa senior powerlifting team will depart from here Friday to take part in the Senior National Powerlifting Championship at Kashipur, Uttarakhand, September 7-13. Both the male and female teams of the state will participate in equipt and unequipt categories.
