Orissa suffer consecutive defeats

Bhubaneswar, August 20:  Orissa suffered a huge defeat of 101 runs against Haryana on the second day of their two-day long match in the Buchi Babu Invitational cricket tournament in Chennai, Wednesday. This was the second consecutive loss for Orissa as they were defeated by Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) earlier in their first match in this tournament.

Chasing a victory target of 292 runs, Orissa could manage only 191 runs in 64.3 overs getting all out in the process. Orissa started from their overnight score of nine without loss, but could not tackle a fiery spell from pacer Harshal Patel (5/39). Harshal returned with a five wicket haul and decimated Orissa’s top order. Amit Rana (3/39) also bowled well to complement Harshal.

Govind Podder (71, 150b, 4×4) was the only batsman to offer some resistance with the bat.

Brief Scores: Haryana 291/10 bt Orissa 191/10 ( Govind Podder 71; Harshal Patel 5/39, Amit Rana 3/39) by 101 runs.

Venketeswar win
Venkateswar English Medium School blanked Vibekananda Sikhya Kendra (VSK) 2-0 in a group-G league match of the 26th Inter-School MCL Cup football tournament at the Unit-VI High School Ground here Thursday.

Santosh Behera of the winning team opened the account in the 20th minute. Tikayata Mohaptra doubled the lead in the 34th minutes. Santosh Behera was adjudged the man of the match.

In another group-A league match, Ramakrushna Mission School got walkover as DAV Pokahariput did not arrive in time.

Team leaves

A 19- member team from Orissa left from here Wednesday to take part in the All India Independence Cup Karate Championship in Delhi, August 22-23. Altogether 200 participants across the country are participating in this tournament.

Police football

Orissa Police will organise the 78th State Police Football Championship in Bolangir August 21- September 6. A total of 44 teams across the state will participate in the competition.
