Bhubaneswar, July 24: After a splendid show by the bowlers, Orissa batsmen rose to the occasion and put up a commendable performance to take their team to the verge of an innings victory against Assam on the third day of the All India K Thimmappiah Memorial cricket tournament at Bangalore, Friday.
Starting from their overnight score of 27 for one, Orissa, on a deteriorating pitch, put up a commendable score of 275, taking a first innings lead of 142 runs. Abhilash Mallick (42, 24b, 3×4, 4×6), Alok Chandra Sahoo (37, 103b, 4×4, 1×6), Anurag Sarangi (35, 107b, 4×4) and Govind Poddar (32, 91b, 5×4) made useful contributions with the bat. Arup Das (3/51) and Krishna Das (3/54) bowled well for Assam.
In their second essay, Assam lost two quick wickets and were reduced to 26 for two at stumps. Medium pacer Suryakanta Pradhan took both the wickets for Orissa.

Awards programme
International hockey star Birendra Lakra, eminent football coach Nanda Kishore Patnaik, veteran basketball player and administrator Ashok Kumar Sahu and journalist Satish Sharma will be honoured with the Biju Patnaik Sports Awards in various categories for 2014 at a function here, August 29.
Birendra has been nominated for the ‘Outstanding Player of the Year’ award which carries a trophy and cash award of Rs 2, 00,000. Nanda Kishore will receive the ‘Excellent Coach’ award. He will get a trophy and Rs 1, 00,000. Ashok will get ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award for promotion of sports in the state (a trophy and Rs 3,00,000). Veteran journalist Sharma will get the ‘Best Sports Journalist’ award, which carries a trophy along with a cash award of Rs 50,000.
Mixed result
Orissa had a mixed day at the office as their women’s team registered two emphatic wins, while the men’s team suffered a humiliating loss against their respective opponents on the second day of the Senior National Rugby 7s Championship at Panta, Bihar, Friday.
In the women’s category, Orissa thrashed West Bengal 10-0 in their first match and spanked New Delhi 20-0 in the second encounter. In the men’s category, Orissa was drubbed by Delhi 0-7.
Grassroots coaching
Thirty participants are taking part in the three-day FIFA women’s grassroots coaching course, which started at the OCA Conference Hall at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. AIFF instructor Anju Tarambekar will guide the youngsters in the camp, while Sradhanjali Samantray has been appointed as the coordinator.
