Sambalpur: The Odisha State Open University (OSOU) in Sambalpur is trying to provide education to people from all walks of life. As part of its fresh initiative, the university has launched a plan to educate jail inmates and staff on different courses on the circle jail premises here Thursday.
It was learnt that, 12 inmates and six staff of the jail have enrolled themselves for various courses offered by the university.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Arka Kumar Das Mohapatra said that age and places have no bar for receiving education.
The jail inmates who are keen to pursue their higher studies will be imparted education on different streams and subjects so that they will be brought back to the social mainstream.
As part of this new system, lecturers will visit the jail premises four days a month and take classes. The inmates will be imparted education free of cost along with study material. The inmates will sit for examinations on the jail premises.
The VC said that, this learning system for inmates will be started in three other jails in the state in a phased manner.
