Outcast man performs son’s last rites alone

Khaprakhol: In a bizarre incident, a man’s body had to be taken on a tractor for final rites after none of his relatives came forward to perform the final rites.

The deplorable incident was reported from Mathiabhata village under Khaprakhol block in Bolangir district, Thursday.

According to sources, Kuna Bariha (27), son of Kabi Bariha was undergoing treatment at VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla after he was diagnosed with fever. However, the youth breathed his last while undergoing treatment Tuesday.

After autopsy, the medical authorities dropped the body in the village. However, as Kabi’s family was socially boycotted from the village over some reason, no relatives turned up to lift the body for final rites.

With no other way out, Kabi took the body in a tractor and performed the last rites by himself. The incident has become the talk of the town.

As per reports, Kabi’s family was boycotted after his daughter eloped with a youth of another caste, reports said.

When contacted, Khaprakhol BDO Tarani Suna said he was unaware of the incident and would extend necessary help as per government norms after a probe.
