Basudevpur: About 100 students of the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Chandamali of Basudevpur in Bhadrak district have fallen ill with fever, accompanied with giddiness and dysentery.
The number of ailing students has crossed hundred in just two days, it was learnt.
While all the ailing students were admitted at Basudevpur government hospital and are still undergoing treatment, parents have meanwhile taken more than fifty children home after preliminary treatment. Some parents are said to be continuing with the treatment at their homes.
However, the reason why the fever spread alarmingly among the students is yet to be ascertained. But parents and local residents have blamed contaminated drinking water and unhygienic surroundings for so many children taking ill in just two days.
Since the institution is coming under the Ministry Human Resource Development, Government of India, there is a provision that a doctor will regularly visit the school for students’ health check-up. But the parents alleged that no doctor has been visiting the school.
When contacted, principal of the school Sangeeta Jaiswal admitted that no doctor has visited the school for regular health check-ups.
“Even as there is a provision for a doctor to visit such institution as ours regularly, no doctor is visiting our institution. And the problem has already been intimated to the Collector,” she said.
