Bhubaneswar, August 9: Padmini Rout was back to her winning ways as she prevailed over Minoo Asgarizadeh of Ireland in the seventh round of the women’s category in the Asian Continental Chess Championship at Al Ain, Sunday. With this emphatic victory, Padmini advanced to the joint third position with 4.5 points in her kitty.
S Vijayalakshmi almost pulled a rabbit out of hat to turn the tables on Mitra Hejazipour of Iran. The lucky victory elevated former national champion Vijayalakshmi to the pole position as the Indian moved to six points out of a possible seven.
In the Open category, Debashis was forced to share points with Gao Rui of China. Despite the draw, Debashis maintained his joint fourth spot with four points.
Abhijeet Gupta crashed through the solid defences of Lin Chen of China to join the leaders pack. Gupta now shares the lead with Surya Shekhar Ganguly and A R Salem Saleh of UAE on 5.5 points from seven rounds.
