Padmini continues her victory march

Bhubaneswar, August 4: Padmini Rout continued her scintillating performance in the women’s category of the Asian Continental Chess Championships which is being held at Al Ain, UAE to share the top spot with two points along with eight other players after the completion of the second round. The Orissa girl easily checkmated her Iranian opponent Hejazipour Mitra in the second round Tuesday to register her second consecutive win in the event.
Mary Ann Gomes and Tania Sachdev were the other notable Indians who had a good outing in the second round. While Gomes got the better of Khadem Alsharieh Sarasadat, Sachdev won against Mir Mahmoud Afamia.
However, Debashis Das couldn’t do much in the open category after drawing his second consecutive match in a row. The Grandmaster from Orissa was held by Xu Xiangyu of China. He is now tied third with one point after the completion of the second round matches. Koneru Humpy who faced a reverse Monday, fought back to checkmate Byambaa Zulzaga in round two to stay at the joint third position.
Asian Youth Chess Championships
Saina Salonika got off to a great start at the Asian Youth Chess Championships being played at Suwon, South Korea. In the U-12 girls category she outwitted Park Sunwoo of the host country to share the lead along with 14 other players.
Her statemates Smaraki Mohanty (U-18 girls) and Mahitosh Dey (U-10 open) also won their matches against Srija Seshadri and Huh Maximilian Romeo Eunhong respectively, to stay in contention. However, Vaibhav Mishra lost out to Iran’s Mosadeghpour Masoud.
Aditya, Abhishek progress
Top seed Aditya Satpathy ousted his statemate Yashraj Naik 6-0, 6-0 to progress to the quarterfinals of the AITA-OTA Talent Series tennis tournament for U-14 and U-16 at the Kalinga Stadium here Tuesday. Joining him in the last eight was Orissa’s Abhishek Mohapatra who defeated Ankit Tripathy 6-1, 6-0.
Chess tourney
The Bhubaneswar Chess Association (BCA) will organise the 29th Bhubaneswar Schools’ Chess Championship August 15th-16th here at the Secretariat Recreation Club, Unit-II. Prizes will be given to the players occupying the top 15 positions. Besides, attractive trophies will also be awarded to the top four players in the age categories of U-7, U-9, U-11, U-13 and girls’. This will be an eight-round Swiss tournament.
