Belpahar: In bid to increase the looks of the town, the municipality undertook a palm tree plantation drive alongside Belpahar main roads in Jharsuguda district.
Bhumi Puja was performed on the auspicious day of International Women’s Day, Friday. Lawyer cum social worker Rutuparna Mohanty performed the puja by breaking a coconut and officially launched the plantation drive.
As per the drive, palm trees will be planted alongside Belpahar-Gumadera and on NHs to beautify the town. Moreover, beautiful flower plants and designs will be placed on the main road to attract tourists and make the town look more attractive.
“Around 250 palm trees will be planted along the roads of Belpahar. This will make the town look good and will help in decreasing heat. Workers and public can take rest under the palm trees and escape the scorching heat,” municipality executive officer Lokanath Kumar Tiwary said.
However, public questioned the relevance of planting trees in summer season. The officials could have done the plantation during winter or rainy season. The plantation drive during summer might not help the plants, a local said.
However, municipality officials are positive and assured all necessary works to protect the plants by employing extra workers to take care of the plants.
