Patient administered wrong blood

Nayagarh: In yet another incident of sheer negligence, a female patient at the district headquarters hospital (DHH) here was administration with ‘O positive’ blood instead of ‘B positive’.

According to reports, Laxmipriya, wife of Madhusudan Behera of Baguapalli panchayat under Bhapur block in Nayagarh district, is suffering from cancer. She had been under treatment at AIIMS in Bhubaneswar and receiving blood.

However, Madhusudan could no longer afford the treatment cost and thus moved his wife to the DHH upon advice from a doctor at AIIMS, where she could get blood free of cost.

Laxmipriya was thus admitted at the district hospital Monday at 10 am for blood transfusion. Her blood was tested and hence verified to be ‘O positive’.

Later a staff nurse administrated her with a unit of ‘O positive’ blood accordingly. Few minutes later, Laxmipriya felt her head reeling.  On reaching the hospital Ajay, Laxmipriya’s brother found that her sister had been administered with a unit of ‘O positive’ blood.

He alleged that her sister’s blood group is ‘B positive’ but she had been given a unit of ‘O positive’ blood.

To prove his point he also produced the documents of AIIMS where it was mentioned that Laxmipriya’s blood group as ‘B positive’.

He alleged that the doctor instead of accounting for the mistake started arguing with him. The hospital authorities took the matter seriously after the press reached.

Informing that Laxmipriya is doing well, ADMO Dr Sweta Mohapatra said, “O positive being a universal blood group will not harm her however appropriate action would be taken against the technician at the blood bank,” Mohapatra said.

“Had it been a blood group other than ‘O+’, the situation would have been fatal,” her relatives and other attendants alleged.
