Malkangiri: A woman from Markaguda in Sadar block here, who consumed poison, died on way to hospital Friday as the 108 ambulance driver transporting her delayed the vehicle demanding a bribe.
Sources said Phula Padiami consumed poison after an argument with her family Friday morning.
Phula’s brother Irma Madakami rushed to Markaguda and called the ambulance to take his sister to hospital. The ambulance reached the village but the driver allegedly asked for a bribe of Rs 1,000.
Unable to pay the bribe Madakami told the driver that he could pay only Rs 300. But the driver didn’t agree. Finding no other way, Madakami agreed to pay Rs 500 and the balance after reaching the hospital.
Meanwhile, Phula died on way to hospital. Her brother said she died as the driver delayed taking her to hospital bargaining for the bribe.
He filed a complaint with the health department. The ADMO has alerted the Sub-Collector regarding the incident.
CDMO Ajit Kumar Mohanty said strict action would be taken against the driver after probing the matter.
