Patient dies as docs fight over role

The doctors entered into a verbal duel over who would treat the patient as both of them were allegedly unwilling to take charge. The patient, however, died before the doctors could arrive at a conclusion

Dhenkanal: Tension prevailed at Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) after a patient died due to delay in commencement of treatment because of an alleged dispute between two doctors over who will take the responsibility of the patient Sunday.

While doctors say that the patient died of chest pain, irate family members alleged that the death happened because of medical negligence due to a spat between two doctors.

The deceased has been identified as Treilokya Sahoo of Gandia Gundurapasahi village in this district.

According to sources, Sahoo was admitted to Sriramchandrapur community health centre (CHC) after he complained of chest pain Saturday. After preliminary treatment, he was shifted to Dhenkanal district headquarters hospital (DHH) after his condition worsened.

Initially, he was attended by a doctor who later referred the case to another doctor.

Following this, the two doctors entered into a verbal duel over who would treat the patient as both of them were allegedly unwilling to take charge. However, the patient allegedly died before the doctors could arrive at a conclusion.

Meanwhile, the deceased’s family members claimed that delay in treatment caused by the unending quarrel between the doctors resulted in the patient’s death.

The incident triggered tension in the hospital and the deceased’s family members and the locals accused the doctors of negligence and unprofessionalism. They also demanded strict actions against the doctor-duo responsible for the death of the patient.

Angry relatives and family members of the deceased staged protest before the Chief District Medical Officer’s office for a while. The agitation was called off after the CDMO assured to look into the matter and take necessary steps accordingly.

The body was then sent for autopsy and later handed over to the family members for final rites.

While reports of sorcery performed in the DHH to resurrect dead persons made news in the recent past, the repeated deaths in the DHH due to alleged medical negligence has become a matter of concern for the denizens now.
