Patient ends life by jumping from 6th floor of DHH

Dhenkanal: In a shocking incident, a patient allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the sixth floor of the district headquarters hospital (DHH) here early Friday morning.

The heart-rending incident has become the talk of the town. The deceased has been identified as Tuna Behera, 22, of Mahulkholi village under Gondia police limits. This is the second such incident in the last six months in the DHH.

According to sources, Behera worked as a driver and was admitted to the Odagaon community health centre (CHC) after he suffered heatstroke yesterday. After a little improvement in his health, he was sent home. However, Behera complained of uneasiness again in the evening after which he was admitted to the DHH by family members.

The medical authorities attended to him and there was improvement in his health after he was administered saline drips. Friday morning, he woke up and went to the sixth floor despite his family members’ objection.

First, he injured himself using a blade before jumping off the sixth floor.

Chief district medical officer, Niranjan Mishra and ADMO SK Bhol alerted the police who launched a probe. On the other hand, it was stated that the patient was mentally unstable and it is suspected that he committed suicide.

“It is an unfortunate incident. The patient was admitted to the DHH Thursday night. He committed suicide as he had slit his wrist before jumping off the building,” said Bhol.

“We don’t know how he reached the sixth floor of the hospital as we were looking for him outside the hospital,” said Shailabala Behera, a relative of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the police have started a probe into the incident.
