Peacock, fawn rescued

Semiliguda: A peacock was rescued at Badabedi village under Semiliguda block in Koraput district, Tuesday. Sources said the peacock had strayed into the village in search of water from a nearby forest.

Meanwhile, it fell prey to stray dogs which chased to attack it. However, some children playing around in the village spotted it and chased away the dogs and rescued it. They then alerted their family elders who informed the forest department officials.

Forest officials reached the village and rescued the bird. It was then taken to the local veterinary hospital for check-up. “We will release it back to the forest after treatment,” an official said.

Similarly, in Mahaliaput, villagers rescued a fawn while it had strayed into the village. Later, Jeypore forest officials reached the village and rescued the animal.

After treatment, the six-month-old herbivore was released to Ghatghumasar reserve forest.

According to villagers, the animal had strayed into the village with its mother last night. While its mother strayed back into the forest, the fawn lost its way in to the village. Later, some youths spotted it wandering around aimlessly and rescued it.

Forester Ramchandra Nepak along with other forest officials reached the village and brought the fawn to his office for treatment. “After treatment, it was released. We are keeping an eye on its movements and trying to reunite it with its mother,” Nepak said.
