People more important than statistics: CM

Bhubaneswar: Giving a befitting reply to the opposition which always criticises the government for rising crime graph, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Friday said for his government, people are more important than statistics.

Speaking on supplementary demand discussion of Home department, Naveen said, “Let me inform the august House that there has been a huge transformation in service delivery at the police station. We are aware that this transformational initiative will certainly increase the reporting and registration of cases. Let me place on record for my government, people are more important than statistics.”

Giving a message to all police functionaries, he said, “Do your job with commitment, without fear or favour. Do not bother about statistics of registration of cases.”

He assured the House that his government would leave no stone unturned to ensure that justice is done in crimes against women.

“Let me assure that any case of neglect especially relating to women and children will not be tolerated, exemplary action would be taken,” he said.

Due to prompt and professional investigation, the Chief Minister said death penalty has been awarded to the accused in four sensational cases of rape and murder of minor girls under POCSO Act. Further, the conviction rate in red-flag cases has gone up to 41.48 per cent in 2019.

The overall law and order and crime situation in the state has largely remained under control and there has been huge improvement in the Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) situation in the state, he claimed.

From August 15 next, people will have a choice whether to visit a government office or not for any service or entitlement.

“Other than places where statutory requirement is there, people will have a choice to avail the services online, through common service centres or doorstep delivery. This is one of the biggest targets we have taken for the government under the 5T charter,” Patnaik stated.

Under 5T initiative, the state government has targeted to make payment of wages through banks under all the schemes of the state government so that poor labourers are benefited.
