Bhubaneswar: A petition was filed with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Tuesday seeking justice for a woman who delivered twins on the verandah of District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Bhadrak after being allegedly denied treatment by the doctors Monday.
In his petition (12604/IN/2019), rights activist Himanshu Sekhar Nayak has informed the rights body that a pregnant woman of Taladumujka under Tihidi block in Bhadrak, was rushed to the DHH Monday as she complained of acute labour pain.
The doctor on-duty, however, asked the relatives to rush the woman to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack as the delivery had some complications and the treatment was not possible at the DHH.
The victim’s family dialled 102 ambulance services for help, but it did not turn up for more than three hours. Eventually, the woman delivered the twins on the hospital verandah.
As news spread, irate people gathered at the spot and held the Health department officers responsible for such a situation.
The petitioner has urged the NHRC to direct the Chief Secretary to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the victim and send the assistance disbursal proof to the commission within four weeks.
This apart, Nayak has also sought a directive to the Health Department Principal Secretary to ensure stringent action against the erring doctors of Bhadrak DHH. Moreover, the Principal Secretary should also be asked to send the Action Taken Report to NHRC within three weeks, the petitioner urged the commission.
