New Delhi: Odisha government has submitted documents in support of the issues framed by the Supreme Court for consideration in the controversial Indirasagar Polavaram multipurpose irrigation project case.
According to sources, the state has submitted 136 documents in six volumes running into 1427 pages. The documents contain all orders, communication between Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and the Centre. It also contains letters written by Odisha Chief Minister to Prime Minister and Ministry of Environment and Forest.
Earlier, the apex court while hearing the matter August 2, had directed Odisha to file documents in support of the issues framed by it for hearing the matter. The court had directed the state government to file the documents in two weeks. The SC had also directed the other states — Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Telangana — to file the documents in support of issues in two weeks after Odisha’s submission.
Notably, the apex court’s green bench of Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta had framed a series of 13 questions in a suit filed by Odisha against Andhra Pradesh in 2007.
The apex court has decided to look into whether the design of the project takes into consideration backwater effect and studies in Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana. The court would also investigate whether the public hearing has been done in the areas likely to be affected by the Polavaram project.
The matter has been listed for hearing September 6, 2018.
