New Delhi: The Telangana state government has moved the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the construction of Indirasagar Polavaram Dam project over river Godavari project.
Telangana in its petition has stated that any modification to the design of the project would severely affect the state. Temple town Bhadrachalam and various other villages close to the project may be submerged, the state urged the apex court.
The Centre should institute a proper study of the project and until that time the dam should not be allowed store water. The state also sought a fresh public hearing on the issue.
Notably, along with this petition, there are altogether three suites against the project which are pending with the apex court.
The matter was heard last January 3. The court had directed the Ministry of Environment and Forests to file an affidavit containing specific information sought by Odisha and Chhattisgarh for conducting public hearing. The court had also asked the Union government to file its response to the queries raised by RELA, an NGO.
The RELA had submitted to the court that the project does not have environmental clearance and it should stop work immediately.
The counsel for RELA, Shravan Kumar said the Union government had not filed affidavit in response to the queries.
