Rourkela: Biramitrapur police have got a major success against illegal gambling just before Diwali with the arrest of 26 persons during a raid on the Upper Bazar of Biramitrapur.

The raid was conducted at around 11pm Friday night following a tip-off received by the Biramitrapur SDPO Susant Dash. Speaking about the raid, the officer said it was based on a very definite input from his informers.

“We got information that gambling was going on in the Upper Market and a large number of people were involved in it. We also got the information about the involvement of some policemen,” said the officer. Police arrested 26 persons, seized cash worth Rs72,500, five motorcycles, 18 mobile phones and over two dozen playing card packs.

The SDPO further added that a few managed to escape the raid and exuded confidence that they will be arrested soon.

“The main accused, Rajesh, is absconding at this moment. We will continue with the raids during and after Diwali and will never allow the practice of gambling to flourish.”
