Police failure in containing lawyers raises questions

Bhubaneswar:   Police inaction to control Monday’s skirmish between two groups of advocates of the high court bar association despite Odisha High Court Registrar General writing to the Director General of Police (dated October 28) mentioning steps to be taken for safety measures inside and outside the court in view of the advocates’ strike has raised eyebrows.

The skirmish took place on the court premises.

In the letter, the Registrar had asked for tight security on the court premises.  The letter also mentioned that police must take responsibility for judges’ personal security and safety of commoners visiting the court.

Despite it, the free-for-all between the advocates took place raising questions.

It is alleged that the police get involved in encouraging the lawyers to take law into their own hands and at the same time involve in political games.

When asked, police officials said everything was in place, but they did not take steps as the court had verbally directed not to take any steps.

However, observers are of the opinion that the police’s version lacks credibility.
