Police inaction delays tracing ‘abducted’ girl

Dharmasala: A 21-year-old girl of Chahata under Dharmasala police limits in this district has been allegedly kidnapped by a youth around two weeks ago and is yet to be traced by police.

The matter acquired a curious turn after Bajrang Dal lodged a complaint at the Dharmasala police station. The girl’s father alleged that his daughter had been kidnapped by one Abdul Rahemat Khan, a youth of minority community in Choramuhan village in the area.

He alleged she had gone to VN College, Jajpur Road December 5 to get her migration certificate. However, she went missing and failed to return home while her mobile phone was found to be switched off.

Family members searched for her at various places, but in vain and later, lodged a complaint at the Dharmasala police station.

However, police took the matter ‘lightly’ and did not conduct a probe except registering a case and is yet to ascertain the whereabouts of the girl, it was alleged.

The girl’s father then came to know that Khan had kidnapped his daughter. The girl’s father after failing to get justice lodged written complaints with the SP and the district Collector and filed a case in the Orissa High Court.

The High Court heard the matter and passed an order directing to provide justice to the girl’s family. Family members were passing their time in distress when the girl rang her mother December 12 and asked to rescue her as the abductors might kill her.

Police swung into action and arrested Shaikh Abdul Hamid Khan, father of the accused after call recordings went viral in the area. He was arrested for his alleged involvement in the abduction and threatening the parents of the girl to kill them. He was produced before the Court of JMFC, which remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.

Bajrang Dal members Mrutyunjay Patnaik, Ranjan Adhikari and Mantu Mallick have alleged that the dilly-dallying tactics of police has delayed the rescue of the girl. They warned of an agitation if the matter was not resolved at the earliest.

Dharmasala IIC Saroj Kumar Sahu said that the kidnapped girl will be rescued soon.
