Puri: History-sheeter Bhagirathi Pradhan alias Bhagu, a resident of Balighat under Talabania police limits in Puri district was arrested late Thursday night after an encounter with the police.
Acting on a tip-off regarding the presence of Bhagu at Tarakaja overbridge near Pipili bypass on the Puri-Bhubaneswar National Highway, Puri police launched a raid. Seeing the cops, Bhagu opened fire on them in an effort to escape. The police retaliated and in the process the criminal received bullet injuries on his left leg.
Bhagu was initially admitted to a hospital in Pipili for treatment where he was put under arrest. Later in the night, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
The cops have seized a 9mm pistol, live cartridges and a motorcycle from his possession. Police said that more than 20 criminal cases have been lodged against Bhagirathi at the Talabania police station. He is also the main accused in Sanjay alias Para murder case.
